Pediatric Thoracic Surgery

Empyema

An infection in the space next to the lung due to the accumulation of infected fluid. Usually difficult to treat with antibiotics as the area where the fluid accumulates has no blood supply. The best treatment is draining the fluid out. This can be done by multiple methods but usually Dr Ba’Ath does it minimally invasive in a procedure known as VATS (Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery). Dr Ba’Ath now has a good series of cases treated in the UAE with this method with excellent results. These children are usually cared for by a team of surgeons, pulmonologists and intensive care doctors.

Pectus Deformities

Pectus Carinatum

Pectus Excavatum

A deformity of the chest where the chest bone (sternum) is pushed inward. Example is in the picture shown. Treatment is usually either conservative by a suction cup or surgical, of which there are multiple options. The most performed one is known as Nuss Bar, where a metal bar is placed in the chest to correct the deformity. Dr Ba’Ath, however, does a different procedure called Ravitch. Reasons for choosing Ravitch are due to the procedure being safer, more versatile, has a high success rate, less pain and treatment can be concluded usually with one surgery. This might come at the price of a larger scar though. Treatment is individualized and tailored to patient and family circumstances and preferences.
